History - Remember the 5th of November

Because I love a certain movie, here we go.

The Gunpowder Plot

Guy Fawkes was found late on the 4th or early on the 5th lurking about in the cellar of the Parliament building.  The justice of the peace ordered a search and twenty barrels of gunpowder were found.

While being tortured, Fawkes revealed he was a member of an English Catholic group wanting to replace the Protestant leadership (by killing the king and others).  The leader was Robert Catesby, whose father had been persecuted by Queen Elizabeth I for refusing to convert to the Church of England.

Fawkes was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered - but while climbing the ladder to the hanging platform, he jumped, breaking his neck instantly.

So now they celebrate in Great Britain, for the failure of the Gunpowder Plot.

V, however, remembers the day not for the failure, but for the attempt.  He wants a revolution.
