Science is Fun Fridays!

In the early 1940s, botanist Richard Evans Schultes went to the Colombian Amazon - to look for rubber plants initially. He spent 12 years, being the first naturalist to explore the area.  He researched the ways tribal people used flowers and vines for medicinal and hallucinogenic purposes, and he documented the plants and the people with his photography. These photos provided a view into lives rarely seen and largely unknown. Makuna youth, Rio Popeyaca Kamsa youth "They use various barks and woods and carbonate powders and fruits.  And then, much like we'd snuff tobacco, they blow this into each other's noses." In 1976 he published A Golden Guide to Hallucinogenic Plants , which studies the physiological effects and cultural significance of these plants in ancient and modern society. In his quest, Schultes tried all the things those around him did... More Photography NPR

My Shots - Wildlife Refuge

Another weekend, another drive into the desert.  In the middle of nowhere, county roads and state routes are dirt - "travel at your own risk." On May 15, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit near Tonopah, NV - the biggest quake we've had in 66 years. There have been aftershocks every day since - more than 500 of 2.5 and above, as well as some 4-5s. They're all focused in an area known as the Monte Cristo Valley. Nevada is the third most seismic state in the US, after California and Alaska.  Our biggest quake on record is a 7.3 from 1915. Our governor has declared a state of emergency for the damaged roads - US 95 (shown above), Route 6, and Route 360.  Estimates exceed $700,000 so we needed emergency funding from the Federal Highway Administration. Music Tasting 8

Image
I'm sure you can understand that I had to listen to this band upon seeing their name.  They're not local though - they're from Essex, UK. "Forget the rock n' roll lifestyle; hard drugs and strip joints have been replaced with tea and the odd bit of FIFA 98."  But that's not to say their music is for a tea party. To me, it's both heavy and chill.  It's melodic, with a bit of chaos. I do hope you enjoy! I really like the jam in this song. Of course, more can be found on YouTube. You can also check them out on  Bandcamp .

My Shots - Out Past Fallon

Image
Hubby found some possible little lakes outside of Fallon he wanted to drive to, but first we wanted to get a gift for our neighbor, so we found a distillery. Turns out we found the oldest distillery in Nevada - Frey Ranch, which is also Churchill Vineyards. One for us and one for the neighbor - I also got a bottle of Gewurztraminer.  Yum. We did find some water, which was good for the pups to enjoy.
