Science is Fun Fridays!

Image
Following up on DART's mission earlier this week, this is a combination of three photographs taken by Hubble after impact. This is from Webb's Near-Infrared Cam, before and after. Observations will take several weeks before it can be determined if and how much the orbit of Dimorphos has been changed. "The telescopes will be watching the timing of the eclipses, when Dimorphos goes in front of Didymos, as we see it from Earth," explains DART program scientist, Tom Statler. More from the  Planetary Defense Coordination Office Scientists will also be studying the material ejected by the impact, to determine the properties of the asteroid.

National Coffee Day

I just love the Hemp & Honey from Reno Coffee. Today though, it's just at home with my Keurig Donut Shop Blend. It's not bad. Some farmers use water, or "washing" processes to remove the fleshy parts, while others use a more "natural" process of allowing the fruit to dry in the sun in a sort of fermentation process.  This of course impacts the flavor of the beans, as does the location in which they grew. Always be sure to verify Fairtrade. Cheers! Days of the Year

Music Tasting 28

I just absolutely love the fact that it's Bad Company, on the album Bad Company, by Bad Company. On this day in 1974, the debut album reached #1 in the US. The band is a supergroup, with members from Free, Mott the Hoople, and King Crimson. Their next album was pretty good too. I feel less strongly about the third album, but I always sing along to this. "Bad Company, 'til the day I die."

Double Asteroid Redirection Test

Yesterday, after 10 months of flying in space, DART collided with the asteroid, Dimorphos. It was a test of a planetary defense strategy, and while the impact was a success, the team needs to observe the asteroid to confirm its orbit around Didymos has been altered as a result.  They expect it to be shortened by 1%, or 10 minutes. "Beyond the truly exciting success of the technology demonstration, capabilities based on DART could one day be used to change the course of an asteroid to protect our planet and preserve life on Earth as we know it," says Director of the Applied Physics Laboratory, Ralph Semmel.
