Blue Supermoon

Image
This was last night from our porch, and tonight it will be bigger and brighter! The biggest and brightest of 2023, in fact. The moon will be a little over 222,000 miles away, which is "exceptionally close." "Once in a blue moon" occurs about every 2 and a half years or so.  But a blue supermoon won't be seen again until 2037.

Chop Suey Day!

The day celebrates the food, but I've never actually had it, and this is what pops into my head first. The album/single was released in 2001, and it was still on the charts when 9/11 happened.  Many stations removed it from the airwaves because of one line:  "Trust in my self-righteous suicide." In 2005, they released a song very much about the war that followed. The band name, System of a Down, was inspired by a poem written by founder/guitarist, Daron Malakian. "Victims of a Down" As the century nears its formidable end, our global experience of universal proportions, predicted by many greats, will arrive at our solar system, to our system of a down. Authoritarian oppression, family abuse, depression caused by conformity, and economic devastation will be neutralized by technological terrorism in times of complete chaos. Control will never again be gained for toleration will become extinct. A husband quarrelling with his wife will not think twice or regret his

On August 23, India became the fourth country to land on the moon, but the first to land on the southern pole. They will be the first to explore the area where recent discoveries have shown traces of water. There was somewhat of a race to revisit the moon, but Russia and Japan's spacecraft crashed into the surface.  The US has a crewed mission planned for 2025. The south pole of the moon has more craters than where we've landed before, and the angle of the sun leaves many of them in total darkness. The mission, named Chandrayaan-3, transported the rover Pragyan. After setting tire to the surface, the rover moved around and confirmed all systems are a go. Which means a main objective of the mission is already complete.

Hump Day History

Image
I've been making a point of catching up on classics, in literature and horror particularly, but I've been meaning to venture more into the Turner Classic Movies as well. On this day in 1946, a premiere. Bogart is an icon of old Hollywood.  In 1999, the American Film Institute selected him as the greatest male star of classic American cinema. Lauren Bacall was voted in at #20 for female star. In 1997, the film was added to the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The Big Sleep  is an adaptation, and the book also ranks among the best of the century. It was originally produced in 1944, but the studio delayed the release in favor of war films.  Bogart and Bacall got married during this time, and so the studio asked for reshoots to capitalize on the public fascination with the couple in 1946. The original cut, which was initially only shown to servicemen overseas, was found in a UCLA archive and restored by benefactor

Best Dressed - Angelina

Well, not only has it been limited fashion lately, but I think the weather/power outage went and fried my computer monitor. I prefer my PC over my phone for this, so we're keeping it simple. Feel free to share your own Best Dressed as this will pretty much be an open thread today. 🙂

Throwback Thursday

Saundra Williams became the first Miss Black America on this day in 1968. The Miss America pageant was being protested for misogyny and fatphobia, as well as racism.  So on the same day, in the same city, J. Morris Anderson and Phillip H. Savage put on their own show. Only the time of day was different, and Savage angled for the best coverage, starting their "positive protest" at midnight, hoping newsmen would drop by after the other pageant.  Anderson wanted his young daughters to see they could be Miss America too, but in a way that would celebrate and embrace their Blackness. For the talent portion, Miss Williams performed a traditional African dance. "Miss America does not represent us.  With my title, I can show Black women they, too, are beautiful." In 1971, Cheryl Browne Hollingsworth was the first African American woman to compete for Miss America.  In 1984, Vanessa Williams was the first to be crowned. Miss Black America  continues to this day.
