 With the continued insistence on Columbus Day, I wanted to acknowledge the real heritage of our country, which comes from the people who were here before. Many of us were raised with stories of how, in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue - but much of the narrative was fictionalized.  They left out the murder, enslavement, and cultural destruction. In recent years, more of that culture is being reclaimed and celebrated. To keep it on Monday's usual topic, there was a strong showing at New York Fashion Week last month, a stage that hasn't really been given to Indigenous designers before.   Naiomi Glasses is a traditional Navajo textile artist.  She has partnered with Ralph Lauren, and spent the last two years re-imagining her designs into a collection called "Color in Motion." Naiomi also curated a selection of handcrafted pieces from Indigenous jewelers. Naiomi first started skateboarding at 5 years old and it is part of her inspiration. "I want this collection to inspire you to go out there and feel like you can do anything." Site

  Jennifer Younger started her handmade jewelry brand "to honor my grandmother who wasn't allowed to practice her Native American culture."  She resides in Sitka, Alaska as part of the Tlingit tribe. She works in silver, copper and gold.  Here, she designed a copper headband and then used a wet plate collodion process to photograph. Copper and abalone. Gold plated brass chain with antique trade beads. Lily Gladstone wore a piece on the cover of Vogue. Earrings and necklace modeled by Quannah Chasinghorse. This piece incorporates Sitka spruce root. These are engraved with forget-me-nots, state flower of Alaska. "As I learned more about the copper and its deeper history to my community, I leaned in on that.  The copper represents stature, strength, supernatural power, and protection." She refers to the Tlingit formline art, which is a feature of the Northwest Coast, distinguished by the use of ovoids, U forms, and S forms. Home

"A shrieking display of female hysteria reverberating back against cultural hypocrisy, anatomical subjugation, and the confiscation of volition." Trends of the year include cargo, upgraded denim, biker vibes, and body armor. These can kind of combine into what is being called "Professional Yet Playful."
