Today commemorates the naming of the state - when Juan Ponce de Leon landed he was struck by the abundance of plant life, but he also wanted to honor the upcoming Easter holiday. "Pascua" on its own means Passover.  Pascua Florida is the Feast of Flowers.  Very Spring. The year was 1513, and when de Leon returned to Spain in 1514 he was knighted by King Ferdinand, named governor of Puerto Rico, and granted permission to settle in Florida.  He wasn't able to return until 1521, but the native population fiercely resisted the European presence, and he was fatally wounded. He is buried in Puerto Rico. The Calusa were people of the Caloosahatchee culture, which is now an extinct tribe. They were described more by Pedro Menendez de Aviles, who would establish St. Augustine in 1565.  He visited their capital, Calos, in 1566 and described the chief's house, their council, as well as their clothing. We took a roundabout drive in Plumas County, checking out Lake Davis first. Then we popped over by Frenchman Lake, where many little creeks are flowing down the mountain sides. This was a prime area to find Great Basin Violet! The boys have enjoyed the waters.  ^_^

  I always seem to have a daffodil for Spring, and that makes me happy.  ^_^ Happiness is gauged in a moment, and life overall. I have a quote from Sex and the City, which is based around a relationship but the point remains: "How often are you happy?" "Every day." "You feel happy every day?" "Not all day every day, but yes, every day." Sometimes you have to find the moment, and sometimes it may be a struggle, but Aristotle claimed it was the one thing we seek "in and of itself."  The pursuit of happiness. ❤️

  I noticed this guy yesterday - everything else is getting ready. Spring means sunshine and growth, a thaw from winter, new beginnings. And the Persian New Year! Nowruz is a celebration based on the Iranian Solar Hijri calendar. It is one of the oldest calendars in the world, older than the Lunar Hijri calendar most Muslims use.  It's also the most accurate solar calendar in use today.  While many countries celebrate Nowruz, only Iran officially uses the calendar. The origins of Nowruz lie in Zoroastrianism, one of the world's oldest organized faiths, based on the Iranian prophet, Zoroaster.  Traditions include ritual dances, gift exchange, and reciting poetry.
