Leap Day!

Image
Leap Day happens every four years, so maybe it's no surprise that "This Day in History" has very little going on. But in 1940, it was the day of the Academy Awards. Gone with the Wind  won eight Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Hattie McDaniel. Hattie was not just the first African American to win an award - she had been the first African American woman to sing on US radio and to perform at Club Madrid, near Milwaukee.  She was also the first to have a leading role on a TV sitcom. But due to racial segregation, upon her death in 1952, she was denied burial in the Hollywood Cemetery. So, on this final day of Black History Month, we honor her.

National Pink Day

Image
Pink is calm, nurturing, and kind. National Pink Day is a day to stand against bullying. In 2007, a couple students at Central Kings Rural High School saw one of their classmates being bullied for wearing a pink shirt.  So they went to a discount store and bought a bunch of pink shirts to pass out at school the next day, encouraging everyone to wear one. Pink has long been associated as a girl color, but in the early 20th century it was actually more common for boys.  The shift occurred after World War II, when "Rosie the Riveter traded in her factory blues."  From there, even feminine products were wrapped in pink. In the 80's, parents were able to learn the sex of their babies in the womb, and gender-specific clothing became more popular, including color coordination. But the point is, anyone can and should feel comfortable enough to wear pink. So if you see someone wearing pink today, give them a smile.

Black History Month

Effa Manley was the first woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, on this day in 2006. She was a sports executive and co-owner of the Newark Eagles in the Negro League. She was a civil rights leader and an advocate for Black ballplayers. Her racial background is uncertain though, and census takers may have been biased in assuming she was African American, being raised by a black stepfather.  She identified as black. The Eagles' first game took place in 1935.  She ran day-to-day operations such as schedules, travel, payroll, contracts, equipment, publicity and promotions.  She was able to get New York City mayor, Fiorello La Guardia, to throw out the first pitch. At this time, most blacks were barred from practicing medicine.  With money raised from the Eagles, the Booker T. Washington Community Hospital was opened, which offered training to black doctors and nurses.  They also raised money for black Elks lodges and other groups that promoted the welfare of Newark's bla

Science is Fun Fridays!

Today's Google Doodle celebrates the 140th birthday of Casimir Funk, a biochemist who was among the first to introduce the concept of vitamins. He began work in organic chemistry at various research institutions across Europe.  He became more and more interested in the effects of food ingredients on certain illnesses such as scurvy, pellagra, and rickets.  He read that people who ate brown rice were less vulnerable to a condition called beri-beri. In 1911, he began experimenting and was able to isolate the substance responsible.  He formed small, ingestible crystals that he called vitamines - vita (life) amine (chemical compound containing an amino group).  At the time, he thought he was working with thiamine (B1) but it was later known to be niacin (B3). He continued his work discovering different vitamins and determining which foods they could be found in.  He published his findings, Die Vitamine, in 1914. He worked as a consultant for the US Vitamin Corporation and, through hi

My Shots - Tufa Rocks

Image
Pyramid Lake is the site of some of the Earth's most spectacular tufa deposits. A rock composed of calcium carbonate that forms at the mouth of a spring, or lake water. There are varieties in the rock, such as this thinolitic, or crystalline. This one shows the lithoid, or dense. And to the right, what I've always called brain rock - the dendritic, or branching. The Pinnacles.

Hump Day Horror

We took a drive up Hwy 70 through Quincy, stopped along Spanish Creek.  We were hoping to pop over to Almanor but the road wasn't snow cleared, so we had to turn around.  I asked Hubby to pull over so I could grab a shot of this abandoned resort in Keddie. Turns out, it's the site of an unsolved quadruple homicide from 1981.  The resort, anyway.  Cabin 28 has been torn down. On the morning of April 12, three bodies were found.  Mother, Sue Sharp; her son, John (age sixteen); and his friend, Dana Hall Wingate.  Thirteen year old Tina Sharp was missing. It wasn't until April 1984 that her remains were found about 2 hours away near Feather Falls. The murders were especially violent - two knives and a hammer were found on scene, with one knife being bent 30 degrees.  Sue had been stabbed in the chest and throat, while John's throat had been slashed.  Dana appeared to have been strangled to death but they each suffered blunt-force trauma caused by the hammer. In 2008, Mari

Nest Box Week

Image
This shot is from Hope, Alaska.  While we were waiting for our food, I could hear the little chirps. The point of the week, of course, is to bring awareness to the disappearance of natural sites.  It encourages paying attention to local nesting birds and to put up boxes to support the conservation of breeding birds. Going with nests, and since I'm off tomorrow, I'll leave you with the eaglets.

Happy Valentine's Day!

And we will be going camping this weekend.  <3 Always beware the wildlife. Including the Gorons. And of course, I found a Metallica. Revolver Magazine recently asked what is the best metal love song - my answer is "Nerdy" by Poison the Well.  In case you don't want to listen,  here  are the lyrics. \m/

Black History Month

Image
On this day in 1923, the first all-Black basketball team is organized - the New York Renaissance, or Rens, as they'd come to be known. Wanting to give New York City's young athletes a better opportunity, Robert L. Douglas struck a deal with a Harlem real-estate developer who owned the Renaissance Ballroom and Casino. The team traveled across the country, most often competing against all-white teams.  Their first game was November 3, 1923 where they beat the Collegiate Five 28-22.  In 1925, in their fifth encounter with the team, they beat the (Original) New York Celtics. From 1932-1933 they won 88 consecutive games.  In 1939, they won the World Professional Basketball Tournament.  To 1948, their record was 2588-529. For the 1948-1949 season, the team was relocated to Dayton, Ohio to replace the Detroit Vagabond Kings, which was part of the racially integrated National Basketball League.  The Rens disbanded afterwards as the NBL merged with the Basketball Association of Americ
