  On this day in 1998, my favorite game was released on Nintendo 64. A love my sister and I share, along with Triforce tattoos. And we were just talking about playing it again, as she has it on Switch. It's just a game that makes my heart so happy, from the relationships within to the kinships in the real world - when someone comments on my wallet (which also has a Triforce) or recognizing someone's phone notification being Saria's Song so we nod.  And yeah, the music is pretty great. I've played a number of the Zelda games, but none of them have stuck with me like this one. I've even got my husband using a Navi reference because he's heard me use it for so long. And here's a real ocarina.

On this day in 1843 the first major wagon train departs Elm Grove, Missouri. A smaller band had left Independence, MO in 1841. They followed the route blazed by fur traders, which took them along the Platte River through the Rocky Mountains via the South Pass in Wyoming and then northwest to the Columbia River.  This came to be known as the Oregon Trail. With the promise of agriculture, many farmers hoped to find better prospects following severe depression in the Midwest. The first part of the journey is through the plains, where river crossings could be dangerous, as well as possible attacks from Plains Indians, who valued the horses.  At night, the travelers would form a wagon circle to protect inside the enclosure. Most injuries came from falling off horses and overturned wagons on the climb up the mountains.  Also dysentery.   This year's theme is to Embrace Equity. That is to be fair and impartial, and it refers to value.  According to the International Labour Organization, globally, women earn 51 cents for each dollar earned by men. So we continue to raise awareness about discrimination, and we celebrate women's achievements. Recently I learned about Elizabeth Magie. Lizzie was born in 1866 in a progressive home.  Her father was a newspaper publisher and abolitionist who toured Illinois with Abraham Lincoln.  She was a writer of short stories and poetry, and she was an outspoken activist for the feminist movement. She believed women were as capable as men in inventing, business, and other professional areas.  At the age of 26, she received a patent for her invention that allowed paper to go through the rollers of a typewriter more easily.  At the time, women were credited with less than 1% of all patents.   Today's Google Doodle celebrates Jerry Lawson, on what would have been his 82nd birthday. He was an electronic engineer and is the father of the commercial video game cartridge. A year before Atari came out in 1977, the Fairchild Channel F was released. Hockey and Tennis games were integrated, and 3 cartridges were available - which included Blackjack, a shooting gallery, and Tic-Tac-Toe.  By 1981, they had 26 "videocarts," as they were called. Google  has some games to play. I didn't have my own video game console until N64, but I had played Atari and OG Nintendo.  From the Mario games to Mike Tyson's Punch Out.  Classics. We don't play much now, and we have Playstation instead of Nintendo.  Long gone are the days of the cartridge though. But we'll never forget.

Sierra Arts Well, this is my first time hearing of this day, and how clever it is! Mario debuted as Mr. Jumpman (a carpenter) in Nintendo's 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game.  In 1983, Nintendo released Mario Bros, in which Mario and his brother Luigi are plumbers, battling creatures that are coming up from the sewer.  In 1987, Super Mario Bros launched on the Nintendo Entertainment System and is now considered one of the greatest video games of all time - also one of the bestselling games of all time. I didn't have NES growing up, but I did get a Gameboy - I played and beat the game a number of times in my childhood.  And then we got the Nintendo 64.  I remember the first time I played, how crazy it was to move in all directions!!
