Animal Life - Falcon Nest

Image
For me, on the West Coast of the United States, there is a 17 hour difference between my time of day and these Peregrine falcons in Melbourne, Australia.  They're also coming out of winter into springtime over there, so it's all flipped. Mama has laid 4 eggs this year!  Incubation period is 29-33 days from when the last egg was laid. Since 1991 this pair has been observed on the roof of 367 Collins Street.  It is the only known nesting site within Melbourne's city center. There's another nest in New South Wales, set up by the FalconCam Project, "a research-based and educational study of the breeding behavior and diet of peregrine falcons in Australia." To date, they have seven years of breeding behavior data and nine years of prey analysis. Diamond laid her first egg yesterday morning, with a second egg expected in the next couple days. Falcons have adapted nicely to urban areas, utilizing skyscrapers as substitutes for cliff faces and canyons.  They do not g

Science is Fun Fridays!

We are looking at a miniature brain created from stem cells, which have spontaneously sprouted embryonic eye-like structures called optic cups. The cups are two strata of cells which will give rise to the retina.  In this study, they developed several types of retinal cells that organized into neuronal networks and displayed connectivity with other regions of the brain organoid, becoming fully integrated and responding to light.  This allowed researchers a glimpse into the interactions between the eyes and brain of a developing embryo. Researchers were able to reproduce these findings - out of 314 mini-brains, 72% grew the optic cups. "These organoids can help to study brain-eye interactions during embryo development, model congenital retinal disorders, and generate patient-specific retinal cell types for personalized drug testing and transplantation therapies."  At some point, Wildhorse Reservoir became our destination so Hubby could fish. In the morning, I saw a stalking heron. And an otter!!  I had no idea they could be found over here. It was such a spontaneous trip, but we saw some amazing things being where we didn't expect to be. #HomeMeansNevada
