Science is Fun Fridays!

Neuro-parasitology is a young field of study that looks at how certain parasites have evolved to understand and manipulate their host's neuro-chemical systems. In the above snail, the parasitic worm it eats takes over the eye-stalks in order to grab the attention of hungry birds.  The worm breeds inside the bird's guts, gets excreted, and the cycle starts over again. Some parasites also engage in "mind control," in that it takes over the navigation of an insect.  Seen above, a parasitic fungus, which will live off the ant until it's ready to release it's spores.  It will guide the ant to a high point and emerge from the body. Another example is a parasitic hairworm, that will infect a cricket and lead it to drown in the water, giving the hairworm the aquatic environment it was seeking. By studying neuro-parasitology, we can learn a bit about decision making in animals and how they control their own behavior. Link to Study Imag

Animal Life - Lost City of the Monkey God

Located deep in the rainforest of Honduras, a team of researchers went to explore ancient ruins in what is also known as 'The White City."  They found wildlife thought to be extinct, as well as species new to science. The researchers documented only the third sighting of the Tiny Hawk ( Accipiter superciliosus). The researchers also documented a Pale-faced Bat ( Phylloderma stenops)  which hasn't been reported for over 75 years. They "rediscovered" the False Tree Coral Snake, which hasn't been seen since 1965. They also rediscovered the Tiger Beetle, thought to be extinct. And they found an unfamiliar fish, known as a molly. The study also found the area to be a sort of refuge for vulnerable prey - deer, tapir, and pigs.  With all of their findings, the area is being treated as a conservation priority. Their report can be read in full here:  https://www.conservation.org/stories/biological-treasures-of-the-lost-
