  156 years ago, the transcontinental railroad reached Lake's Crossing, where Charles W. Fuller had built a bridge to cross the Truckee River, establishing a connection between Virginia City and the California Trail.  He later sold the property to Myron C. Lake. With the railroad, construction superintendent Charles Crocker decided to name the community after Major General Jesse Lee Reno, a Union officer killed in the Civil War. In 1871, Reno became the county seat for Washoe.  Extension of the railroad in 1872 helped boost the local economy. The University of Nevada was founded in 1874 in Elko, following the Morrill Land Act Grant of 1862.  In 1885, the university was moved to Reno, and Morrill Hall stood alone. The city was incorporated in 1903, and in 1906 became the "Divorce Capital" thanks to the US Steel Corporation president, William Corey.   I came across some notes of my dad's I had packed away and I thought this would be a good mission for the day.   From 1970. He took "Borealis" from this song for one of his band names. I remember he used this album to show me how the sound moves from left to right, how it fills your whole head when positioned correctly (or wearing headphones). Some songs you hear over and over again, but not this one. I might personally choose "Gimme Shelter" from Let it Bleed but.... Cheers, Pa.

  Curious about what I share my birthday with, I came across this, a celebration of the "Occasion of the Birth of Krishna." An annual Hindu festival, it doesn't always occur on this day.  According to their lunisolar calendar, it is the eighth "tithi" of the Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada Masa.  This overlaps with August or September. Krishna was born in chaos, a time of persecution.  His uncle, King Kamsa, was told by fortune tellers that a child of his brother, Devaki, would kill him.  So Krishna was taken across the river to be raised by foster parents.  When his uncle tried to kill him, he appeared as the Hindu goddess, Yogmaya. He later returned to Mathura to kill the tyrant king and reinstated his grandfather. Krishna is one of the most popular and widely revered among Indian deities.  He is the god of protection, compassion, tenderness, and love.  He is worshipped as the eighth avatar of Vishnu.  A belated collection for Pa's birthday. He would make Facebook posts titled "Spinning Tonight" to share what he was listening to.  Every now and then I keep that tradition going, especially on his birthday. My sister and her hubby came over, so we each made an album choice. Anthrax - Among the Living Sevendust Sick Puppies - Tri-Polar And some Johnny Cash. It still hits me when I hear something new, I want to run and tell him to listen, I want to know if he likes it as much as I do.  He inspired such a love of music in us, his daughters, and he fostered what we loved.  He bought me so much Metallica...   Android Jones Two years ago I officially welcomed everyone to RenoVous. It was an effort to continue with my fashion, photography, reading, and science posts but it's become so much more than that! I truly appreciate each and every one of you for your interest and your interaction.  Making these wouldn't be nearly as fulfilling without you guys, so THANK YOU!! We'll stick with our Monday theme with some sketches from the upcoming Cinderella movie.
