Halloween Hop!

Image
First up! Best Costumes! Janelle Monae Kerry Washington Girls of Riverdale. Latto Heidi Klum is currently in process for a later reveal. I've been watching 101 Scariest Movie Moments on Shudder, and here comes a spoiler: #1 #2 So good. As you know, we've also been reading ghost stories for the month. I haven't quite finished "The Horla" but I should today. A definite theme throughout these stories has been madness, which does often go hand in hand with ghosts.  There's always doubt in oneself, the questioning of others.... Share music, scenes, photos, tricks or treats!!

Science is Spooky!

I mean, imagine running into these guys! Rotten Red Gapers, to be exact.  They pump water into their bodies to appear larger, but it also reminds me of a horror movie scene. Like the line, "Tentacles from the Deep." And "Depths Unknown." The Kraken! Look, I'll even creep myself out. NOAA

Music Tasting 30

I'm excited because tonight I get to be on a Listener Advisory Panel. They're going to feed me, pay me $25.00 and free swag, plus value my opinion? That's a win. Now, I like our rock station, and one of my pals is a DJ, but I do think we need more new rock and less classic rock. Everyone likes AC/DC, but we don't need it playing simultaneously on three different stations.  I expect that on KOZZ. A comparison is the rock station in Winnemucca, which plays so much more of a mix as well as songs never played on the radio here.  When it comes to streaming, that's the one I choose. Rock 94.3 KDOT KOZZ Speaking of new rock though, I heard this last night. #1 in national airplay New from Maneskin.   I haven't heard this one on the radio yet (might not), but "Supermodel" has been playing well.  I'd like to encourage them to play some of their Italian language songs. One of my favorite things from the Dot is that they have Lou Brutus nights.  He has a wid

Book Club - Ghost Stories

Man-Size in Marble  by Edith Nesbit A not so spooky but fine enough ghost story.  Poor Laura. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman This one though, I'm not sure it really is a ghost story, but it was haunting.  I felt my anxiety rise as she lost her mind - how expertly written that was.  I had a sense of Lovecraft as I was reading, the insanity of "The Rats in the Walls."  So I thought it was interesting to find he had commented on the story, saying it "rises to a classic level in subtly delineating the madness." Previously there was mention of feminism in both of these stories, and they do both portray a woman who is treated as fragile and unable to handle themselves, with husbands who must tend to them.  Although I have a much more negative opinion of John in the second story.  I was seriously thinking he was gaslighting her. I went ahead with the next story, The Cigarette Case  by Oliver Onions.  Another fine ghost story. The last one is The Hor

International Artist Day

To celebrate the incredible world of art, and to honor those creative souls who will leave a record of today for the future.  I came across this artist in action one day downtown. This piece is from a Plein Air Painting event at the Reno Aces ballpark. We have mostly local art in the house, but one of my all time favorite artists is Salvador Dali, this one in particular: Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man A few years ago I met an artist from Rwanda, who shared his traumatic experiences and his beautiful work. He runs a gallery called the Niyo Arts Centre as well as the Niyo Foundation, which "has been established to assist and support through art children in the streets, single mothers, genocide survivors and more generally, individuals stroke by poverty." Niyo

Here's a mouthful: ornithomimosaurians, or therapod dinosaurs which bear a resemblance to the modern-day ostrich.  The specimens found in Mississippi, however, reveal the largest known to have existed, clocking in over 1700 pounds. Researchers were able to determine there are actually two taxa of different body sizes, and that they cohabited. They concluded that not only does this provide "key information on the diversity and distribution of North American ornithomimosaurs from the Appalachian landmass, but it also suggest broader evidence of multiple cohabiting species of ornithomimosaurian dinosaurs in Late Cretaceous ecosystems of Laurasia."  IFL Science

Thoughtful Thursday

Image
Definition: A mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. I took a college course on Mindfulness from a professor specializing in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.  He explained thoughts as leaves in the river current, to see them, and to let them float by... I've been practicing a mantra to keep myself centered, to not dwell on my anxieties.  I've come to realize that I've been coping with this for years by making notes, an effort to lessen the weight on my mind. Happy Heart.  This is for today because work has me on edge, but I know I'll get on track. I just need to relax.  :-)

On the exoplanet WASP-121b, scientists think it might rain liquid sapphires and rubies.... It is incredibly close to its star and runs about 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to melt and vaporize metals, such as barium, which is surprisingly found in the atmosphere. "The puzzling and counterintuitive part is: why is there such a heavy element in the upper layers?" "Given the high gravity...we would expect heavy elements like barium to fall into the lower layers of the atmosphere." We've been studying planets such as this "ultra-hot Jupiter" because they're easier to observe.  Being hot and gaseous, their atmospheres are inflated, but apparently we don't understand them as well as we thought. IFLScience In case you missed it: NASA has confirmed the DART mission impact changed the orbit of Dimorphos by 32 minutes. Focus is now shifting to analysis of the "ejecta" - the pieces of rock launched into space by the impact.  The recoil fr
