Science is Fun Fridays!

The fusiform gyrus is the part of our brain that processes faces. Some people have face blindness, or prosopagnosia, where the identifying features of a face are difficult to make out.  1 in 50 people experience this, including Brad Pitt and Dr. Oliver Sacks. There's a much rarer condition, called prosopometamorphopsia, of which only 81 cases exist in published literature.  In this, faces are distorted.  One man, Victor Sharrah, recently helped create a computer image of what he sees. "What people don't understand from a picture is that the distorted face is moving, contorting, talking to you, making facial gestures."   The visual can vary - some people see dragon faces or fish heads, and others see horrors like eyes gouged out or cheek cavities. Many people with PMO have been diagnosed as schizophrenic based on presumed hallucinations.  And it's very likely more people have the condition but don't realize they're seeing differently. Music Tasting 45

Today is International Women in Music Day, and that is Olivia Rodrigo's girl band. They rock. With female guitarists in mind, I found out about Nili Brosh. On such a list is also Nancy Wilson, of Heart, a classic. Her sister Ann has a new song with David Draiman of Disturbed. Perhaps you've heard about Beyoncé's new country album - one of the songs is called "The Linda Martell Show."  Linda Martell was the first successful black woman in country music.

World Theater Day

Image
Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London. "All the world's a stage." Six of the oldest theaters in the world are amphitheaters from France, Spain, Italy, and Greece. The Theater of Epidaurus is said to have the best acoustics in the world. I've never seen a Greek or Shakespeare play, but I've been to some theaters.  Locally, we have the Pioneer, where I've seen Annie and Fosse. On our trip to NYC we attended the Eugene O'Neill Theater to see The Book of Mormon.   Broadway was definitely a bucket list item. I saw The Nutcracker  fairly young at Balley's, which was the MGM stage that held a full airplane for  Hello Hollywood Hello. We have some smaller community college theaters which is where I've seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show  and The Little Mermaid. And I just remembered I saw Equus  at another local, Bruka Theater. What's your first or favorite theater memory?

Book Club - Author Spotlight

On this day in 1920, F. Scott Fitzgerald had his first book published, This Side of Paradise. He started the novel while at Princeton.  After three years in college, he left to join the military.  While stationed in Alabama, he met Zelda Sayre, daughter of a Supreme Court justice.  At the time, she rejected him, afraid he wouldn't be able to support her.   He moved back to New York and finished his work, becoming the youngest author ever published by Scribner's.  Now with fame and fortune, he convinced Zelda to marry him. In 1922, he completed his second novel, The Beautiful and Damned. While in Europe (1925), he wrote The Great Gatsby, which was then followed by Tender is the Night .  During this time, Zelda's mental health deteriorated, a theme seen in the book.  It was published in 1934. Fitzgerald passed away in 1940, leaving behind a fifth unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon, which was released posthumously. He wrote 178 short stories in his lifetime, and I recently co

Chimaeras are a group of fish also known as ghost sharks.  The species is related to sharks but are thought to have diverged around 400 million years ago. In October 2018, a deep-sea survey collected the above specimen in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Thailand.  It was recorded as Chimaera aff. macrospina  but further research has concluded this is a new species. Members of the Chimaeridae are told apart by differences in their snouts and the position of their anal fins.  This one has a short snout and large oval eyes, which are iridescent green.  It has been named Chimaera supapae, in honor of Professor Supap Monkolprasit, who devoted her life to the study of cartilaginous fishes in Thailand.

World Tattoo Day

Image
I have three no fuss, simple tattoos.   The above Triforce, from Zelda, that I share with my sisters.  I am wisdom. I have music notes from a song my dad wrote for me. And I have candy hearts with mine and Hubby's initials, $14 on Valentine's Day. But I love watching Ink Master and seeing real artistry in amazing tattoos. I will always lean towards black and white though. Ryan Ashley But color can be done really well. DJ Tambe And we should also mention that many people all over the world have had tribal tattoos associated with their status, lineage, and connection with the divine.  They are also powerful symbols of the community itself; from Polynesian to Aztec, African to Native American, each tribe has their own traditions. This man is from the ancient Konyak tribe of India.

International Day of Happiness

Image
I woke up kind of irritated today so this is just the motivation I need. "Finding joy in the little moments, and appreciating life's simple pleasures are key ingredients to a fulfilling life." Yes, that includes Pharrell too.   And now I'm vibin'. Smile with the music.  :-)

Happy Spring!

Image
I noticed this guy yesterday - everything else is getting ready. Spring means sunshine and growth, a thaw from winter, new beginnings. And the Persian New Year! Nowruz is a celebration based on the Iranian Solar Hijri calendar. It is one of the oldest calendars in the world, older than the Lunar Hijri calendar most Muslims use.  It's also the most accurate solar calendar in use today.  While many countries celebrate Nowruz, only Iran officially uses the calendar. The origins of Nowruz lie in Zoroastrianism, one of the world's oldest organized faiths, based on the Iranian prophet, Zoroaster.  Traditions include ritual dances, gift exchange, and reciting poetry. From the 13th century Persian poet, Rumi: In my heart you are the mirthful ray You are the caring, though my companions they Happy is the world with the Nowruz and with the Eid You are both my Eid and my Nowruz today. Happy New Day! 🌸

Science is Fun Fridays!

There's a party this weekend!   You see, Bredo Morstoel has been on ice since 1989.  He spent a while in a Tuff shed in Nederland, Colorado, but he was recently moved to the Stanley Hotel's old ice house in Estes Park. When he died, he was shipped to the Trans Time Cryonics facility in Oakland, CA where he was kept in liquid nitrogen for four years.  In 1993, he was moved to Colorado where his daughter lived, wanting to start a facility of her own. In 1996, as she was about to be evicted, she was concerned her father would thaw.  She spoke to a local reporter who spoke to city council, and a municipal code was passed allowing the "keeping of bodies."  Bredo was grandfathered in and became a media sensation. His home is now the world's only museum dedicated to the science of cryonics. The science originated in 1962 with Robert Ettinger's The Prospect of Immortality.   He discussed the implications of freezing and resuscitation, whereas for Alcor, a cryonics res

Animal Life - Eaglets

Image
In Eagle Country, Florida we have two eaglets.  They're over a month old now, but they won't fledge until around 12 weeks. In Big Bear, California they're sitting on three eggs.  Pip watch began at the end of February, but a recent article indicates they are unlikely to hatch.  Mom Jackie hasn't had much success in her six years, only two have survived. Girl Scout Day

Image
Girl Scouts was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low when she organized the first Girl Guide troop in Savannah, Georgia. Stated mission: To build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Low wanted girls to get outdoors and become more independent and resourceful.  She organized camping trips and community service.  The girls mastered skills and received badges of commendation. In 1917, the first cookies were sold as a way for a troop in Oklahoma to finance activities.  It has evolved into a entrepreneur program, teaching kids goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.  Sales also enable collaboration and integration, working together towards common goals. On the side there you can see the current mission still includes outdoors and life skills as well as entrepreneurship - and STEM.  "Giving girls the know-how to invent the future." 100% of the revenue raised from cookie sales stays with the
