My Shots - Fresh Air Feeling

Image
Hubby wanted to fish a little so we took a drive to Topaz. Washoe Valley comes first though. The pups were so happy, and the water wasn't too cold for them. And a drive by the Carson River. Hubby caught a small trout but we tossed him back.

Artemis Update

Day 13, the halfway point for Orion where it will continue its retrograde orbit before returning home. Orion has been performing so well, managers are considering additional test objectives to "further characterize the the spacecraft's thermal environment and propulsion system to reduce risk before flying future missions with crew." Here's a shot from Day 6, when Orion passed by the Moon. NASA

Holiday Weekend Open Thread

Image
I have Thursday and Friday off this week. Dinner plans tomorrow, of course, and I'm making yams. Friday is Record Store Day, and the day we celebrate my dad, so we'll definitely be stopping by Discology.  I usually grab a release I know he would have been looking at. Such as this: I also found a short story, if anyone's interested. A Thanksgiving Dinner That Flew Away "Honk!" Happy Holiday!

Animal Life - Turkey Barn

Image
Farm Sanctuary rescues animals from unethical and abusive factory farm industry practices, advocating for laws and policies to improve these conditions. Founded in 1986, they hope to change the way we view and treat farm animals.  On their website, you can adopt a turkey. This is Elsa. And this is Roberto, the Adventurer. The funds help them care for the rescued turkeys as well protect others still being exploited in animal agriculture.  We should all be more aware where our food comes from and how those businesses treat their animals. Thank that turkey before you cover them in gravy. Farm Sanctuary

Science is Fun Fridays!

Boab trees grow large and live long.  The oldest in Australia is about 1500. So it's no surprise that dendroglyphs have been found in the Tanami Desert, belonging to the Jaru people. Brenda Garstone is Jaru, and she teamed up with archaeologists to find and document these carvings.  So far, they have found 12. The above is a snake, as were most of the findings, but others were of emu and kangaroo tracks.  The team also spotted grinding stones and tools around the trees. Boabs disintegrate after death, which leaves little behind.  Preservation and documentation is all the more important in order to maintain these ancestral connections to the land. There is mention of how these carvings link to "King Brown Snake Dreaming."  I found two Indigenous renderings. From 1986, Billy Japaljarri Hogan From 2009, Darryl Bellotti  Science News

Transgender Awareness Week

Image
I decided to post this in honor of one of my oldest, bestest friends. I'm not here to politic or explain, just accept. I know my friend well enough that I understood when he called to tell me, and I'll never forget the moment I really saw HIM. Watching him grow and find a sense of freedom since is all the reason I need to believe it was the right choice for him, his truth. Yesterday, the Human Rights Campaign marked 10 years of tracking violence against transgenders. November 20 is Transgender Day of Remembrance.  This year, 32 lives have been lost, although the number of deaths are likely under-reported. GLAAD

To the Moon, Artemis!

Image
NASA's Space Launch System rocket carries the Orion spacecraft. This first mission is unmanned, with an itinerary to travel 40,000 miles beyond the Moon and return to Earth in about 25 days. Artemis I is the first integrated flight test of the agency's deep space exploration systems, "helping us prepare for human exploration on the Moon and, ultimately, Mars," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.   Astronauts are expected to fly in the Artemis II mission in 2023.
