  Minnesota Wild Rice Well, it's the end of National Soup Month, and Reno hosted a Soup Week starting on the 21st.  I didn't get the actual passport for points, but I still enjoyed some noms! The Gold n' Silver makes some of the best soups, and of course, every Friday is Clam Chowder - my favorite. They also made me a fan of Cream of Asparagus, which took me by surprise. Hubby brought some homemade Pozole Verde from a coworker, and oh man was that good. Do you know what the National Soup is? Louisiana Gumbo

  A team of scientists discovered a sinkhole with a forest deep inside. Located in Luoquanyan Village in China, it is 630 feet to the bottom with ancient trees growing around 130 feet. It is no surprise for the area, which is home to karst topography - a landscape of dissolving bedrock which causes sinkholes and caves.  Rainwater collects carbon dioxide as it runs through the soil, becoming more acidic, then trickles through cracks leading to tunnels and voids. The larger area, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its karst formations, which also includes rock pillars and natural bridges. Researchers say species unknown to science could be hiding in this gaping hole.

  Fungi packaging is the styrofoam replacement we need. Mycelium is combined with agricultural feedstock, such as hemp hurds, to create water-resistant and insulating material.  It is 100% biodegradable, composting in about 30 days when added to soil. Companies such as IKEA and Dell have already committed to the change.  There appears to be quite a few companies in the business of making such products, such as Ecovative. And hey, #FungiFriday Mycelium is the root structure of mushrooms, and here it is spreading.

  A week to educate the public, and especially owners of hoofed animals (including zoos), on the significance of hoof care.  Negligence can result in infections as well as lame and sore feet. Even-toed ungulates are so-called for bearing weight equally on two of their five toes.  This includes cattle, pigs, giraffes, camels, sheep, deer, and hippos. Odd-toed ungulates use three or one of their toes.  This includes horses, rhinos, and tapirs. In either case, the other toes may be present, absent, vestigial, or positioned posteriorly.   Most hoof care has been focused on horses, and horseshoes first appeared in ancient Rome around 500 BC. In the 20th century, becoming a farrier was a skilled profession.  They were considered authorities in the care of hoofed animals, combining veterinarian and blacksmith knowledge. Hoof care includes trimming and shoeing, maintaining good hoof balance and proper footing in weather conditions.  In dry weather, moisturizing may be necessary if the hoof is

  Popeye was created on this day in 1929 as an addition to a long running comic strip called Thimble Theater , written by EC Segar. Olive Oyl was an established character, but Popeye quickly became the more popular. In 1933, the characters were adapted by Max Fleischer for cartoon shorts with Paramount Pictures. This was the third to be released. Fleischer continued production through 1957. The legacy lives on - I grew up watching Popeye in the 80's and the spinach references still exist today. I'm also pretty sure, in almost any group, someone will know what you're saying if you say, "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."
