Hump Day Horror

Image
I had to have a post for my current username reference. On this day in 1977, the Son of Sam, David Berkowitz, committed his eighth shooting, just a few days after the anniversary of his first. Stacy Moskowitz and Robert Violante were sitting in a parked car under a streetlight, kissing on their first date.  The shooter approached the passenger side and fired four times before fleeing into a park.  Violante lost an eye, and Moskowitz died of her injuries. Detective John Falotico was given two weeks to solve the murder before the case would be turned over to the Son of Sam task force.  On August 10, Berkowitz was arrested. During his interrogation on August 11, he explained that "Sam" was his neighbor, and Harvey, Sam's Labrador, was possessed by an ancient demon which commanded that Berkowitz kill people. "There are other Sons out there, God help the world." He would later say that his claims of demonic possession were a hoax. The movie, Summer of Sam,  came ou...

International Day of Friendship

Image
Friendship between peoples, countries, cultures, and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. By accumulating bonds of camaraderie and developing strong ties of trust can can contribute to the fundamental shifts that are urgently needed to achieve lasting stability, weave a safety net that will protect us all, and generate passion for a better world where all are united for the greater good. "We can't help everyone, but everyone can help." - Ronald Reagan The Olympics are a decent example of this coming together - yes, there's competition, but there's also sportsmanship and meeting new people who share a similar dedication. Hilary Heron of Panama, Luisa Blanco of Colombia, and Filipa Martins of Portugal. The Olympic Truce calls for global cessation of hostilities that begins seven days before the start of the Games and lasts seven days after the Paralympic Games end.  It was originally established in Ancient Greece to end the ...

Biscuit Basin Boardwalk in Yellowstone National Park following a hydrothermal explosion. On July 23rd, it's been determined that water suddenly transitioned to steam in the shallow hydrothermal system beneath Black Diamond Pool.  Debris was then shot hundreds of feet above the ground, with grapefruit sized rocks being thrown tens to hundreds of feet from the source. This was not caused by any volcanic activity.  Seismicity and emissions remain at their normal background level. But here, you can see the surprise. This did alter the shape of the pool, and in the after image you can see some murky overflow. The basin will be closed for the remainder of the season for maintenance and monitoring.

My Shots - Mineral Bar Campground

Image
The road down from Colfax to the river is narrow and curvy. Views from our campsite. It was hot but the North Fork American River felt amazing. And it was a beautiful place. So yeah, I said we were heading to Auburn, but it was a part of the Auburn State Recreation Area in Colfax. And tomorrow I'll be off because we're having a Cousins Day at Six Flags! ^_^

Music Tasting 48

Image
Amy Winehouse passed away on this day in 2011. And in 2008, this was the day Madam Tussaud's unveiled her waxwork model. So it just seems to be an Amy Day. This one's often mentioned as underrated. I saw this one in a few top 5 rankings. George Michael apparently claimed this to be his favorite track of all time. And a beautiful cover. "Back to Black" is of course often mentioned as a best, but I wanted to find some less heard.  I also like her version of "Valerie" with Mark Ronson.  The original:

World Listening Day

Image
I'm off tomorrow for a camping trip into Auburn. This is a shot from Thomas Creek, where I sat calmly listening to the water flowing by. This day wants you to hear nature around you, to really listen. But we can also expand that to appreciating music, paying attention to the people around you and what they're saying.  Especially in these days with our phones in our faces, it's nice to really engage with someone in a conversation. (Another Zelda reference for you). ^_^

Hump Day History

Image
On this day in 1917, the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was officially changed to Windsor. King George V ordered that the British Royal Family dispense with the use of German titles. His father, King Edward VII, was born to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.  Prior to his accession, the throne had been under the House of Hanover since 1714, starting with George I. His mother was Sophia of Hanover, granddaughter to the House of Stuart, which you may recall from our previous bit of Scotland history. Back to Windsor - the name was taken from the royal residence/castle in Berkshire. This was during World War I when anti-German sentiment was high.  London had been bombed by their aircraft named Gotha G.IV . At the same time, the Russian Revolution had broken out and George's cousin, Emperor Nicholas II, was forced to abdicate.  Fear about the future of monarchies in Europe convinced him to abandon all titles under the German Crown. Kaiser Wilhelm II, also a cousin, abdic...

Animal Life - Humor in Wildlife

Image
Photographer Libor Vaicenbacher believes humor is one of the best tools to tell a story about an animal. Kangaroos will cool themselves with saliva, and here it had just applied some to its ear. Things that make you go "Hmm..." "Doesn't it know how to read?" Link My shot of a marmot who was dragging his belly along for a good scratch. Llamas are always good for a laugh. 😃
