Hump Day History
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, or the Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Limits, and Settlement between the United States of America and the United Mexican States.
Signed on February 2, 1848, officially ending the Mexican American War.
Mexico recognized the cessation of present-day Texas, California, Nevada, and Utah as well as parts of present-day Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming.
The Rio Grande became the accepted border, even though Mexico had always claimed it to be the more northern Nueces River. Following the annexation of Texas in 1845, President Polk attempted to purchase the disputed territory, but Mexican forces interpreted the oncoming soldiers as an attack, and war was declared in 1846.
In the end, Mexico was paid $15 million for damages and the US assumed $3.25 million of debt Mexico owed.
