Science is Fun!!

Science is Fun on Thursday this week, as I'll be starting my vacation tomorrow - I'll be gone all next week as well.  :-)  I may pop into the comments, but I will not be making any posts.

The Golden Goose Awards celebrate those whose scientific work has significantly benefited society but may sound absurd.  Here are the 2019 honorees:

David Sachar - By measuring electrical potentials across frog skin, Sachar was able to determine the electrical potential of human intestines, which ultimately led to the creation of oral rehydration therapy as a treatment for cholera, saving millions of lives. [1966]

Jack Levin and Frederik Bang - They found that horseshoe crabs have very special blood that is highly sensitive to endotoxins.  They created the LAL (litmus amebocyte lysate) test which confirms that drugs, injections, and pharmaceutical equipment are free from endotoxins, (which can cause fever in humans). [1956]

Noel Rose and Ernest Witebsky - They were the first to notice that animal's immune systems could react to and attack cells within their own bodies, which scientists had no idea of at the time.  Their findings greatly improved our understanding of autoimmune conditions such as lupus and MS.  [1950's]
