Jerry Garcia began performing in 1961 with various groups in the San Francisco bluegrass and folk scene.

By 1965, he was with the band that would become The Grateful Dead.

This *may* be the first song they wrote together.

1978, The Closing of Winterland

They are considered "the pioneering godfathers of the jam band world," although Jimi Hendrix and The Allman Brothers were hitting similar vibes.  It is the range of their influences and structure of their live performances that sets them apart.
