Animal Life - Australia

As you may have heard, Australia is on fire.  It is believed that nearly 500 million animals have been killed since the start of the fire season in September.  There are horrible images of burned koalas and kangaroos - and while attention needs to be drawn, I don't want to share those images.

The Irwin family run a Wildlife Hospital in Australia and have been very busy as of late.  Above, their 90,000th patient, an orphaned platypus.

Up to 30% of the koala population has been wiped out, and a third of their habitat destroyed.

Many animals are choking on the smoke as well.  Wombats panic at the smell of smoke, but they can't run fast or far.  Flying foxes are being affected by drought and the lack of food.

There is also concern about habitat recovery and the relationship between the plants and animals.  For example, if potoroos (above) are hit by the fire, some plant species may be unable to regenerate, which could then kill other animals which rely on the plant for food.
