Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Soloman Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
In 2015, the Asian American Advancing Justice group released a report which indicated Las Vegas as having the third largest population of Asian Americans in the Western region, and concluded that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the fastest growing racial group in Las Vegas, with Filipinos being the majority.
*I couldn't find much regarding Northern Nevada, unfortunately.
Today's Google Doodle celebrates the 61st birthday of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
He passed away in 1997, and the Hawaiian flag flew at half staff on the day of his funeral.
His coffin lay at the state capitol building, only the third person to be so honored, and the only non-government official.
