Science is Fun Fridays!
An artist's representation of a triple system found 1,000 light-years from Earth.
By tracking the two companion stars, scientists were able to locate the black hole, which is closer to our solar system than any other found to date.
FEROS (Fiber-fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph) showed that one of the two visible stars is orbiting an unseen object every 40 days.
The black hole does not interact with its environment and so it is truly black. Others release powerful X-rays through violent interaction.
Location of the system, known as HR 6819
The team used the MPG/ESO 2.2 metre telescope in Chile.
ESO is an astrophysical organization established in 1962. It is financially supported by 14 countries - Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
