Native American Heritage Month

Image
Welcome to Cahokia, a Pre-Columbian Native American city, the largest and most influential urban development of the Mississippian culture.  Today, the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site resides in St. Clair County, Illinois and is one of 24 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States. The mounds are the largest prehistoric earthen structures in the Americas north of Mexico. The original site contained 120 of these mounds, over 6 square miles. Monks Mound is the largest, rising 10 stories tall.  Excavation revealed the evidence of a large building, possibly a temple or chief residence. There is a petition to change the name, as it represents Trappist monks who stayed there after Euroamericans settled in the area. Change.Org Sophisticated engineering has been displayed throughout the site, including a Grand Plaza that was expertly and deliberately leveled, and not just for flooding as originally thought, but for ceremonies, gatherings, and games. Rattlesnake Mound is referred to a

Science is Fun Fridays!

Image
Aaron Dysart, of St. Paul, Minnesota, combines his love of art and science. This installation is called "Latitude." He used the tube dancers you often see outside car lots or cell phone stores and linked them to eddy flux towers gathering atmospheric data across the globe.  "They don't just measure the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, they measure the direction in which it is moving.  So scientists can figure out if the land is releasing more CO2 or sequestering it." This installation was called "Byproduct" and was set up at Fulton Brewery Taproom. The colors displayed alternated based on data from a sustainable wastewater research project by Paige Novak. Manufacturing creates waste, including brewing beer.  The wastewater is full of carbon-containing compounds that require a lot of energy to treat.   Novak's team is working on treatment technology that can be used onsite, and the installation presents the amount of usable energy produced by

Beaver Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse

Image
The November full moon, also known as the Beaver Moon or Frost Moon, always shines near the stars of Taurus and Aries.  It will reach its full phase on Friday morning, 3:57 EST.  At this time, it will be passing through Earth's shadow for a partial eclipse.  Only a thin sliver of the southern rim will be outside the shadow, with a 97% reddish hue. It will be visible to everyone on the night side of Earth. For my area, maximum eclipse will be 1:02am but it may be overcast.... Schedule by Location This eclipse will be the longest partial since 1440, lasting for 104 minutes. Space Leisure

Hump Day History

Image
On this day in 1958, the Kingston Trio reached #1 on the Billboard charts, marking a first for folk music. The song is a murder ballad from 1868, when Tom Dula was hanged for the murder of his fiancée. The protest folk music of the 60's owe some of their success to this band, as it would have been unlikely for artists to get signed had Capitol Records not done so well with these boys. Acts such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. And later, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. This Day in History

Button, Button, Who's Got the Button?

Image
The National Button Society, founded in 1938, established Button Day as a celebration of collecting and crafting buttons.  While I don't intentionally collect, I do have a bag full of randoms. It is believed that the first button can be credited to the Indus Valley Civilisation, of the Bronze Age in South Asia.  It was made from a curved shell and was used as ornamental embellishments.   For practical purposes and design, buttons have been with us for a while. One of the reasons I went with this today is the new book I started. I'm not very far into it, but Gwendy has just received the button box.  As I read the description, I was picturing these kinds of buttons, not just any button - but then I realized I don't even know what a button box is!  A musical instrument?   I don't know, so far Gwendy's dispenses an impossible kind of chocolate, and the mysteries are left to her to figure out.  There's a button each for the 6 populated continents, and an everything
