Hump Day History

On this day in 1958, the Kingston Trio reached #1 on the Billboard charts, marking a first for folk music.

The song is a murder ballad from 1868, when Tom Dula was hanged for the murder of his fiancée.

The protest folk music of the 60's owe some of their success to this band, as it would have been unlikely for artists to get signed had Capitol Records not done so well with these boys.

Acts such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.

And later, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan.
