Today's post started with a look at the Moeraki Boulders, but expanded into other concretions as well.

A concretion is compact matter that forms within layers of sedimentary rock, as mineral cement drips within the spaces between particles.  The sediment cements around a nucleus, which can be a leaf, a piece of shell, or a fossil.

The Moeraki Boulders are mudstone concretions that have been exposed on Keokohe Beach in New Zealand, and are protected in a science reserve.

Sandstone concretions can be found on Bowling Ball Beach in Mendocino County.

Hematite concretions have even been found on Mars!
