Art Class - Georges Seurat

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

Georges Seurat was a French post-impressionist artist, known for his techniques, chromoluminarism and pointillism.  He was born on this day in 1859.

Seurat is considered an icon of 19th century painting, and is credited with initiating Neo-impressionism.

Science-based interpretation of lines and and colors influenced their art, and they were drawn to urban scenes as well as landscapes and seashores.  Some believe this became the first true avant-garde movement in painting.

Here's an up close look at his pointillism technique from the above.

He also created art with Conté Crayons, which were graphite or charcoal mixed with a clay base.

His first exhibited work, 1883.
