  The Paris Catacombs are underground ossuaries containing the remains of several million Parisians. They were built in the 18th century, partly in response to a surplus of dead bodies, and partly in response to sinkholes. In 1777, King Louis XVI created the Inspection Générale to map and maintain the quarries on which the city had been built, and they raced to fill them before more homes were lost. At this time, most people were buried in communal graves on church grounds.  The graves would remain open until they were full, and after some time the grave would be reopened to move the bones to a charnel house. The Holy Innocents' Cemetery had been in use for over 500 years, and overcrowding had become an issue.  The smell was one thing, but fluids and gases from decomposing bodies was impacting the surrounding market and homes as well, with many reporting respiratory issues, vomiting, and delirium.   Hubby sure loves the movie, which was released this week in 1986, but I figured we'd look more to the real thing. The US Navy TOPGUN school, which is now called the Strike Fighter Tactics Program, is located at the Naval Air Station here in Fallon. The school was initially established in Miramar, CA in 1968.  It was moved to Nevada in 1996, driven by the need for more air space and air-to-surface range space.  Filming of the first film was, therefore, in California, but Top Gun: Maverick  showcased Fallon, including real-life training. The training focuses on advanced fighter tactics, combat skills, with air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons employment. The airfield was built here in 1942, as part of a defensive network against a feared Japanese invasion.

 We have long recognized the importance of music in our lives, throughout history and across cultures. Dr. Oliver Sacks wrote a book about how music can move us, heal us.  People with aphasia, who struggle to speak a coherent sentence, can often still sing - people with Alzheimer's often respond to music even when they respond to little else. Musicophilia Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University have developed a music therapy to assess consciousness levels in children who have suffered significant brain injuries.  MuSICCA, or Music therapy Sensory Instrument for Cognition, Consciousness and Awareness, uses personalized musical stimulation and manipulation to see how the patient responds. A music therapist observes the child's behaviors and records these observations against a set of scales, including responses to various musical stimuli, giving the therapist a picture of the patient's level of consciousness and the strengths and weaknesses of their responses.  The inf...

Number one on my bucket list is to graffiti a train car.  Not with a tag, but with a quote.  Something colorful to catch the attention of those who may be stuck behind a crossing.  I've always enjoyed that. Stopped in the desert will be the place to do it, I think.  I just need to have the spray paint ready to go.

 "The Castle" of H.H. Holmes, one of America's first well-known serial killers. He was hanged on this day (1896) in Philadelphia, charged with the murder of Benjamin Pitezel.  The exact number of victims is unknown.   Holmes moved to Chicago in 1886 after graduating from the University of Michigan.  He worked in a pharmacy, which he later bought from the owner's widow.  She then disappeared. After a series of cons, Holmes had enough money to begin work on his home across the street.  He would rent out rooms to young women and tourists, many who went missing.  At this time, he was also selling skeletons to medical schools in the area. He had dabbled in insurance scams to pay for his education, and he was finally caught when trying to use a corpse for another scam.
