Music Tasting - International Jazz Day

Image
"The music addresses the desire for eliminating discrimination and promoting freedom of expression.  The day itself is intended to promote peace, diversity, respect among different cultures, and highlight the need for human rights and dignity." Herbie Hancock, a jazz pianist and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. My grandpa loved jazz, and if I recall correctly, he especially liked Duke Ellington. A friend in college got me into Thelonious. So share some jazz today!! Days of the Year

Here's an interesting animal I had never heard of! Colugos are tree dwelling animals, who carry their young in their patagium, "a membrane or fold of skin between the forelimbs and hindlimbs on each side."  These pouches also allow the colugo to glide from tree to tree.  They are the most capable of gliding mammals. They are close relatives to primates, and are often called flying lemurs, although they're not true lemurs.  They do not have opposable thumbs, so they climb slowly using sharp claws. They live in the tropical forests of southeast Asia, and while very little is known about their behavior, we do know they eat leaves, flowers, sap, and fruits. Since they are nocturnal, they have these big eyes for light collection. These animals are threatened by habitat destruction and they are hunted for their meat and fur. The gravely endangered Philippine Eagle considers them a favorite treat.

As You Like It Online Reading Summary and Analysis Act 4, Scene 1 Rosalind, as Ganymede, speaking with Jacques about his being melancholy. "I have neither the scholar's melancholy, which is emulation; nor the musician's, which is fantastical; nor the courtier's, which is proud; nor the soldier's, which is ambitious; nor the lawyers, which is politic; no the lady's, which is nice; nor the lover's, which is all these: but it is a melancholy of mine own, compounded of many simples, extracted from many objects, and indeed the sundry contemplation of my travels, in which my often rumination wraps me in a most humorous sadness." Orlando arrives, having broken his promise to visit on time, so she gives him a hard time about accepting his love.  He says he would die.  She tells him men don't die from love, but she decides to give him another try and tells Celia to marry them., but Orlando must leave to dine with the duke.  He promi

Earth Day 2020

Image
April 22, 1970 was the first official Earth Day, so we're celebrating 50 years today.  The Earth, of course, is celebrating much more than that. NASA is using #EarthDayAtHome to acknowledge this year, since we can't have the usual gatherings at local parks and whatnot.  They have a few activities suggested  Here . Earth is my favorite thing to photograph - there is so much beauty in the land and the plants and the sky.... Here's a shot from the desert from last weekend, looking towards Peavine Peak.  That mountain was the background of my childhood... "Mother Earth, you are my life support system.  As a soldier I must drink your blue water, live inside your red clay, and eat your green skin.  Help me to balance myself.  As you hold in balance the Earth, the sea, and the space environments.  Help me to open my heart, knowing that the Universe will feed me.  I pray my boots will always kiss your face, and my footsteps match your heartbeat.  Carry

"Blue lava" erupting from the Kawah Ijen volcano in Indonesia - this is due to combustible sulfuric gases coming into contact with hot air. This volcano has extremely high quantities of sulfuric gases.  Exposed to oxygen and ignited by the lava, the gases readily burn.  This effect is only visible at night. Lava/sulfur flow.   This acid lake in the crater is colored turquoise because of the acidity and dissolved metal content. We can also see the "solfatara," the white plume where sulfur-rich gases escape through a vent. After the sulfur gas cools it combines with the lava to form a solidified rock, which miners brave the conditions to obtain and sell to the refinery.  Prolonged exposure can lead to throat and lung irritation, difficulty breathing, and a propensity for lung disease. As You Like It Online Reading Summary and Analysis Act 2, Scene 1 We meet Duke Senior and Amiens in Arden, as well as some other lords.  Duke talks about how nice it is, and suggests they go kill some venison.  A lord then mentions Jacques, weeping into the brook over an injured deer.  The Duke asks to be taken to Jacques. Act 2, Scene 2 We jump back to court where Duke Frederick is asking about his missing daughter.  A lord mentions the jester is missing as well, and the girls were overheard chatting about Orlando, so they are surely all together.  The Duke asks for Oliver. Act 2, Scene 3 Orlando is returning home, but Adam stops him from entering. "Oh unhappy youth,  Come not within these doors; within this roof The enemy of all your graces lives...." Adam does not want to refer to Oliver as his brother, or as Rowland's son even.  He begs Orlando to leave, offers the money he's tucked away, and he will follow, "To th
