Book Club - Shakespeare Read-Along

As You Like It

Act 2, Scene 1

We meet Duke Senior and Amiens in Arden, as well as some other lords.  Duke talks about how nice it is, and suggests they go kill some venison.  A lord then mentions Jacques, weeping into the brook over an injured deer.  The Duke asks to be taken to Jacques.

Act 2, Scene 2

We jump back to court where Duke Frederick is asking about his missing daughter.  A lord mentions the jester is missing as well, and the girls were overheard chatting about Orlando, so they are surely all together.  The Duke asks for Oliver.

Act 2, Scene 3

Orlando is returning home, but Adam stops him from entering.

"Oh unhappy youth,
Come not within these doors; within this roof
The enemy of all your graces lives...."

Adam does not want to refer to Oliver as his brother, or as Rowland's son even.  He begs Orlando to leave, offers the money he's tucked away, and he will follow, "To the last gasp with truth and loyalty."

Act 2, Scene 4

Back to the forest we find Rosalind (Ganymede), Celia (Aliena), and Touchstone.  They are weary and hungry from their travels.  They overhear Corin and Silvius discussing Silvius' love for Phebe.  Silvius departs and they call to Corin, asking for rest and food.  He confesses he works for another man and cannot provide, but advises the lot is for sale.  Rosalind/Ganymede offers to buy it and employ Corin.

Act 2, Scene 5

Amiens is singing, and Jacques begs him to continue.  Amiens tells him the Duke has been looking for him, but Jacques has been avoiding him.  He asks him to sing again, and then gives him a stanza he wrote himself, and they sing together.  Jacques then says he's going to sleep.

Act 2, Scene 6

Now Orlando and Adam are entering the forest, but Adam can go no further.  Orlando tells him to wait and he'll find food - if he returns without, then Adam can die, but if he dies before he comes, "thou art a mocker of my labour..."

Act 2, Scene 7

Okay, I'm not entirely done.  I should have this finished on my lunch break though.

Just wanted to get the post up for you.  :-)
