Science is Fun Fridays!

UCLA is the coordinating center of the National Neuropsychology Network.  The project involves compiling detailed neuropsychological data and integrating these with information from electronic health records (identifying information removed).  The data is then made available through a National Institute of Mental Health archive for study and analysis by qualified scientists. A recent grant will allow the project to enroll new participants with an emphasis on populations that have been underrepresented in biomedical research. "This work holds the promise of increasing equitable access and advanced understanding of neurocognitive disorders," says Professor Robert Bilder. By databasing, they aim to identify the latent constructs measured by the neuropsychological tests and determine the most efficient measurement methods to identify these constructs, leading to more precise tests and batteries for assessment. Tests There are currently five clinic sites, which includes the Univ

Today we're celebrating the birthday of Countee Cullen, one of the finest American poets of the Harlem Renaissance. As a young boy, he won a citywide poetry contest and saw his words in print. At New York University, he won the Witter Byner Poetry Prize and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. His first collection, Color , was published in 1925, the same year he received his B.A. and started Harvard.  He received his M.A. the following year. In 1928, he went to France to study on a Guggenheim Fellowship. "Harlem Wine" "Brown Boy to Brown Girl (Remembrance on a Hill) (For Yolanda)" Written in 1924, he married Yolanda Du Bois in 1928, daughter of W.E.B. Du Bois. Full Collection

Hump Day History

Image
The fall of Constantinople occurred on this day in 1453, marking an end of the Middle Ages. The Ottoman Empire defeated the Byzantine, and many scholars fled to Italy, bringing their knowledge and laying the groundwork for a revival of ideas - the Renaissance. The Islamic world had already been living its "Golden Age," with cities like Cairo and Baghdad becoming centers for learning, where thousands of books were written and many ancient texts translated into Arabic. In the above painting, we see the Walls of Constantinople, or Theodosian Walls.  These were considered the strongest and most fortified walls of the ancient and medieval era.  But the Ottomans had gunpowder, and were able to repeatedly fire massive cannonballs which created gaps. You can clearly see, now in Istanbul, that restoration has been done. Emperor Constantine XI needed to protect from a naval attack as well, and ordered a defensive chain be placed at the mouth of the Golden Horn.   On May 21, Mehmed th

When we think about corals, we typically think of tropical waters, but they are actually incredibly diverse and researchers believe they just found a new species in the icy cold waters of the Arctic Ocean. The team from the Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census were documenting the depths of the ocean.  On a ROV dive, they came across a field of crinoids, or sea lilies, and there they found the corals living on the stalks. "It really demonstrates coevolution in the deep sea," said Professor Alex Rogers, Principal Investigator at Ocean Census.

One of the best things about Pyramid Lake is that the shore is open for wherever you want to set up.

The Oregon Trail

Image
On this day in 1843 the first major wagon train departs Elm Grove, Missouri. A smaller band had left Independence, MO in 1841. They followed the route blazed by fur traders, which took them along the Platte River through the Rocky Mountains via the South Pass in Wyoming and then northwest to the Columbia River.  This came to be known as the Oregon Trail. With the promise of agriculture, many farmers hoped to find better prospects following severe depression in the Midwest. The first part of the journey is through the plains, where river crossings could be dangerous, as well as possible attacks from Plains Indians, who valued the horses.  At night, the travelers would form a wagon circle to protect inside the enclosure. Most injuries came from falling off horses and overturned wagons on the climb up the mountains.  Also dysentery. The vast majority of pioneers survived the trip, and migration continued on the trail until 1884, when Union Pacific constructed a railway along the route.

World Day for Cultural Diversity

Image
The United Nations General Assembly first declared this day in 2002, following UNESCO's adoption of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, recognizing the need to "enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development, and global peaceful coexistence." I came across a recommendation of documentaries that feature cultural insight and which are considered important in the ethnographic field. One of the most respected films is from 2002. The oldest is from 1922. From 2013, witness the changes to a village in Bhutan as television and internet are introduced. More on that one here:  Independent Lens Lastly, about three of the Lost Boys of Sudan, among those who fled the civil war in the 80's. Embrace diversity.

Hump Day Horror

Patricia Columbo was just 16 years old when she met 36 year old Frank DeLuca.  He managed a pharmacy and she worked at the coffee shop next door.  She went to work for him instead, and they began a sexual relationship. She eventually moved into the home he shared with his wife and 5 kids, before he divorced and they moved into an apartment together.  Patricia's father beat Frank pretty badly over that. Two years later, the pair broke into the Columbo home and murdered her parents as well as her brother, brutally.  She was not initially a suspect, and had hoped to receive inheritance, only to find she had been written out of the will. The police were eventually led to the couple and after they were arrested (05/15/1976), DeLuca's employees revealed they saw him washing and burning bloodstained clothes.  He had apparently threatened them to stay quiet, and even tried to have them killed while he was in jail, but another inmate thwarted the plan. The two were sentenced to 200-30

Winner: Switzerland Ireland got my vote and overall attention.  They came in 6th. Armenia finished 8th. I thought Spain was fun, they placed 22nd. Czechia was not a final qualifier, just out at 27th, but I liked the message of their song.
