Animal Life - Dolphin Day

Image
Dolphins are one of my favorite animals - they're adorable and brilliant, playful and curious.  I know they've been a topic here before, but not for their official world appreciation day. Although this day is also about awareness in protecting these amazing creatures. While I like to respect cultural traditions, the act of grindadráp  saw the slaughter of 1400 dolphins in 2021, off the coast of the Faroe Islands, and I cannot condone that.  Another 130 were killed this year.  (Pilot whales are also victims in this). Stop the Grind  Sea Shepherd is an agency actively protecting critically threatened waters, which includes the Vaquita Porpoise Refuge, the most endangered cetacean in the world. But let's get back to celebrating dolphins.  :-)

This Day in History

Of course, there's  9/11  - but in 1851, there was the Christiana Riot. Above is the site, and home of William Parker in Christiana, Pennsylvania. Maryland landowner Edward Gorsuch came into town with a posse and a warrant under the Fugitive Slave Act.  The community successfully defended the four people who had fled, and Gorsuch was fatally wounded. 37 African Americans and one white man were arrested for treason.  The accused were defended by abolitionist congressman, Thaddeus Stevens. The Compromise of 1850 called for the return of enslaved people but permitted a jury trial, as long as the fugitives were prohibited from testifying in their own defense. The acquittal sent a message to the South that their "property" could not be secured in the North, and this led to a series of riots including Bleeding Kansas and the raid at Harper's Ferry, which propelled the nation towards the Civil War.

Is My Blue Your Blue? Color is subjective in both personal and cultural terms. In Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Lakota languages, the word for blue is also used to describe what English-speaking people might refer to as green.  In Welsh, the word for blue came from the word for green. Turquoise is considered a cyan color, which is between green and blue on the visible spectrum of light. From the test, the researcher reports that many responses cluster around hue 175, and the nominal boundary between blue and green is 180. Neuroscience and AI Patrick Mineault, PhD

Best in the West!

This was last weekend, and we didn't make it out there, but I still love this event. For the most part, I've settled on Aussom Aussies.  Their sauce is so good. Site This year's winner was Blazin' Bronco BBQ from Ohio. 2nd place was Battle Born Smokers.  They're a food truck/catering business around town. And Foghat played! Mmmm, ribs. Not to mention the corn on the cob, the baked beans, the cornbread.... All the best.

Book Club - September

Image
I was kept pretty busy during our camping trips so I didn't get a lot of reading done, but I'm close to finished with this one. When I'm done, I might return to  Tales of the Jazz Age  before I find something new to start.  My sister just finished one called You May Now Kill the Bride , so I'm intrigued. I always like to have something full on hand for our vacation - which starts next Friday through the following week.  Our plan is to travel around Utah this time, Bryce Canyon.  :-) So what are you reading?
