  On this day in 1777, Congress adopts the Stars and Stripes. It was based on the Grand Union flag carried by the Continental Army in 1776, which had the 13 stripes along with the Union Jack in the corner. Also representing the original 13 colonies, the stars formed "a new Constellation." Since it's Pride Month, let's look at another flag. (Google celebrates if you search for it). First created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker (commissioned by Harvey Milk), each line represents a different part of the community: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow is sunlight, green is nature, turquoise is for magic and art, indigo serenity, and violet is the spirit of the LGBTQ+ people. After Milk was assassinated, demand for the flag was high.  Due to manufacturing issues, the hot pink had to be removed, and Baker chose to have turquoise removed.  The six color flag has flown for 40 years now.   That's the hope, but the Athletics are asking for a lot of money from Clark County.  A majority of residents aren't supporting the legislation, which is still in review. The team is currently 18-50, the worst team in baseball.  They also have the lowest payroll in MLB and a history of low game attendance.  There's some question of their ability to pay their portion even if the legislation approves the funding package, not to mention the live entertainment tax. The team's owner, John Fisher, has an estimated net worth of 2.2 billion.  He also owns a Major League Soccer team, the San Jose Earthquakes. I love baseball, and I've never had a problem with the A's, but this is putting a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, including fans in Oakland who want Fisher out. NV Indy

  Researchers from the Queensland Brain Institute have explored how viruses alter the function of the nervous system.  The findings provide a potential explanation for persistent neurological effects, such as those seen in "long COVID" cases. The team discovered that infection leads to the fusion of neurons, which affects their firing patterns and overall function.  These malfunctions could be a major contributor to neurological diseases and clinical symptoms. It was previously believed only one of two things could happen: cell death or inflammation. "Our research reveals a new mechanism for the neurological events that happen during viral infection.  These viruses include HIV, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, measles, herpes simplex, and Zika."   Chief Seattle died on this day, 1866. Thirteen years before, American settlers had named their settlement for him in thanks for his welcoming and kindness. Born sometime around 1790, Chief Seathl was of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes of the Pacific Coast, an area that is today called the Puget Sound. Many of the first villagers were there for timber, and the trees would skid down the chute to the new sawmill.  The chute became known as "Skid Road," and when the business district moved south, it became a haven for drunks and drugs, and the term became synonymous with a bad part of town. In 1855, Indians from the White River Valley attacked the village, and Chief Seattle reasoned with them to stop.  He knew the white settlers would eventually drive his people out, but he felt that resistance would only anger them and hasten the Indians demise, so they made peace. Library haul!  I went to one I haven't been to before and their Nevada section was right up front, so I grabbed the Numa history.  I then wandered through mystery and found the Tahoe collection. I picked up the Mike Carey book because I was looking for The Girl with All the Gifts , but this one sounded interesting too. I'm starting with the mystery. What are you reading?
