Rumi Day

Image
Born on this day in 1207, Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi is one of the most widely read poets in the world, and the best selling poet in the United States. A Sufi mystic, many of his poems contain spiritual wisdom, and universal themes of love and unity.  He wrote mainly in Persian, but sometimes Arabic, and included Turkish and Greek words. Upon his death in 1273, he was buried in Konya, and his shrine became a place of pilgrimage.  His followers and his son started the Mevlevi Order, also known as the Order of Whirling Dervishes for their Sufi dance. Science is Fun Fridays!

I'm not going to pretend to really understand this, so I'm going to quote directly. "Researchers from the University of Chicago have discovered a way to turn a fluorescent protein into a biological qubit that can be built directly inside a cell, then used as a way to detect magnetic and electrical signals within the cell." "Our findings not only enable new ways for quantum sensing inside living systems but also introduce a radically different approach to designing quantum materials," says Peter Mauer, co-principal investigator and assistant professor of molecular engineering. Live Science qubit = quantum bit, a fundamental unit of information Examples of quantum materials include superconductors and topological insulators.

Hump Day History

The Manzanar National Historic Site. One of ten concentration camps, where more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were held from March 1942 until November 1945. The "Soul Consoling Tower," as the kanji characters translate, was built in August 1943 on the cemetery grounds.  Master stonemason, Ryozo Kado, and Buddhist minister, Shinjo Nagatomi, designed it as a permanent tribute to those who perished at Manzanar.   150 men, women, and children were buried here. Most families requested the removal of remains after the war, but six graves are still intact.

My Shots - Vacation Part 4

Camp #2 at Robinson Creek. This site is more outside of Bridgeport, closer to home. Another named Twin Lakes. Tomorrow we head south again for some history.

My Shots - Vacation Part 3

Mammoth Lakes was a nice little town, reminded me of places around Tahoe. Above is Lake Mary, and she overflows into Lake Mamie. Which then flows to Twin Falls, and the Twin Lakes. We drove down from here to the lakes level. We made it up the Minaret Vista. From here we wanted to drive on towards Devil's Postpile, but the gate was closed to private vehicles.  Shuttles only.  No thanks.

This is Hot Creek, flowing from the Upper Owens. It was a little warm here, but farther down is the Geological Site. Groundwater heated by subsurface bodies of molten rock reaches the surface and combines with the cooler creek water. This pool looked very warm. Little Hot Creek was not just a little hot. As we headed back home we stopped at Travertine Hot Springs. "Travertine" is a form of limestone deposited around mineral springs. 60 tons had been mined from this site and used to build the interior facings of San Francisco City Hall.

Vacation Open Thread!

From Highway 395 overlooking Mono Lake. This year we're driving on past that to check out Mammoth Lakes and Bishop.  A few sites in the area I'd like to see, not to mention the lakes themselves and some hot springs. There's a fire in Yosemite, so we're hoping the winds keep the smoke to the west. I'll be back on the 18th! ❤️

To Write Love on Her Arms

His arms too. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. One of my cousins took his own life just over 4 years ago.   He was 17. I came across this organization/movement "dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide.  It exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery." Care Bear Day

Image
Did you know the Care Bears were initially designed for greeting cards?  Illustrator Elena Kucharik worked for American Greetings in 1981.  Jack Chojnacki was head of the toy and licensing division, and he recalled an immediate "aaaaah factor." The toys were introduced in February 1983 at New York City's Toy Fair.  Cabbage Patch Dolls were also showcased that year. Parker Brothers got on board and released six books before the release of the first television special. The original 10 Care Bears were joined by their Cousins in 1984, and in 1985 they got a feature film. It was the highest grossing animated film outside of the Disney market. Today celebrates their mission, that "sharing is caring," so share your care!
