Rumi Day
Born on this day in 1207, Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi is one of the most widely read poets in the world, and the best selling poet in the United States.
A Sufi mystic, many of his poems contain spiritual wisdom, and universal themes of love and unity. He wrote mainly in Persian, but sometimes Arabic, and included Turkish and Greek words.
Upon his death in 1273, he was buried in Konya, and his shrine became a place of pilgrimage. His followers and his son started the Mevlevi Order, also known as the Order of Whirling Dervishes for their Sufi dance.
