My Shots - Artown

Image
The month of July is dedicated to the local art scene. Along the river I found some Yarn Bombs. We went to a baseball game last week. And then I took myself to the Glow Plaza. Artown

Music Tasting 26

Image
On this day in 1990, this pretty decent movie was released, but that's not the point of today. It's the song, which is one of my all time top favorites. So, with the oldies in mind, here's a band I listened to over and over again growing up. The intro seriously gave me flashbacks of roadtrips to Sacramento with my Walkman. Here's one I will always sing along to. This one reminds me of Hot August Nights. Speaking of Hot August Nights, we got to see this band perform one year. So share some of your old favorites!!

James Webb Telescope

Image
The first fully operational image released by NASA from the James Webb Telescope. This is the SMACS 0723 galaxy cluster.  The combined mass of the cluster acts as a gravitational lens, magnifying distant galaxies while the gravitational field bends light rays from more distant galaxies behind it. Here  NASA is posting the images one by one, and this is the most recent. Carina Nebula Captured in infrared light, this image reveals "previously invisible areas of star birth." Part of Webb's science operations will be to study the gas and dust involved in star formation. Tomorrow will be the NASA Q&A.

Science is Fun Fridays!

After three years of upgrades and maintenance, the Large Hadron Collider is back up and running.  It immediately observed three exotic particles for the first time. Scientists at CERN say it was a new kind of pentaquark and the first ever pair of tetraquarks. Quarks are elementary particles that usually combine in groups of two or three to form hadrons, such as the protons and neutrons that make up atomic nuclei. But that's not what I initially saw the in the news. Conspiracy Theorists Think The Large Hadron Collider Transferred Us Into a Parallel Universe Yesterday. In theory, the LHC could detect evidence of extra dimensions. The Kaluza-Klein theory, for example, is built around the idea of a fifth dimension and suggests that there would be heavier versions of standard particles in other dimensions, which could only be revealed at the high energies reached by the LHC. Book Club - July

Image
I'm finishing up the true crime collection I mentioned last month, A Rage to Kill. I'm very much on a true crime kick, from the book to a podcast to some case file documentaries... And next up for reading will be my second Agatha Christie, Mrs. McGinty's Dead. Yeah, I'm clearly into murder. Evolutionary psychologists say we're drawn to these stories because murder, rape, and theft have played a significant part in human society over our years.  It's in our nature to discover "Whodunnit" in order to understand the criminal, and to better protect ourselves. Women tend to be more of the fanbase for true crime, and you can probably guess why - they're more likely to be a victim of murder and assault.  It's about gaining insight into killer's motives but also how victims escaped. The downside of that is sometimes the story just reinforces the fact that you really never know.... So, what have you been reading?

Hump Day History

Today, Google is making sure we're familiar with comedian Charlie Hill. Born on this day in 1951, he was a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, the first Native American to be a TV comedy stand up star.  He wrote for the series, Roseanne (1995) and Moesha (1996) , and he appeared on Night Shows with Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, and David Letterman. Here he is on the Richard Pryor Show in 1977. In 1999, he was the subject of a PBS documentary titled, On and Off the Res' with Charlie Hill. In 2005, he was part of the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. Charlie died of lymphoma in Oneida, December 2013. He was honored in 2010 for "his lifetime of promoting positive images of Native Peoples and bridging cultural differences through the healing power of humor." And that is something worth carrying on.
