Operation: Santa Paws
Founded by Justin Rudd of Long Beach, California in 2001, the month of December is an open opportunity to donate toys, treats, blankets, food and other supplies to your local animal shelter.
Approximately 4.1 million animals are adopted from shelters each year, but nearly 6.3 million enter. About 800,000 of those are strays that are returned to their owners.
There are also local rescue groups and sanctuaries for dogs and cats, such as this Kitten Rescue.
My cousin volunteers as a foster for kittens at our SPCA, to get them socialized and ready for adoption. She usually ends up keeping at least one.
