Book Club - Extending Shakespeare

  I was too sucked into Old Bones  by Preston & Child, which I finished last night, and now I can finally start this year's play. But that won't be happening this weekend, since my sister is getting married! So I will be off tomorrow for preparations. Just in case, here's a PDF version. Chernobyl Remembrance Day

  On this day in 1986, an experiment on Reactor Number 4 led to a power surge, causing core explosions and radiation leakage at the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant in Pripyat, Ukraine. 32 people died and dozens more suffered radiation burns.  Many more died from the attempted cleanup, and approximately 5,000 people developed cancer from the airborne radiation exposure. Being under Soviet rule at the time, the incident wasn't reported until Swedish authorities detected the fallout at the Forsmark plant on April 28. Of course, Chernobyl was of concern again recently as Russia waged war on Ukraine, capturing the plant and digging trenches.  Ukrainian authorities say soldiers were very likely exposed to radiation, especially since levels were reported to be heightened following the activity. Fashion - Maison de Mode

  On the heels of Earth Day, Maison de Mode held the 5th Annual Sustainable Style Awards. The house itself is home to various brands, operating as a platform for sustainable fashion, "connecting creators, curators and consumers for a better tomorrow." Founders are Amanda Hearst, Hassan Pierre, and Carmen Busquets. Sustainable Style Honoree, Carolyn Murphy This model-turned-designer released the 100% sustainable "Homegrown Collection" through her Mother Denim brand. Impact Award Honoree, Aurora James The founder of Brother Vellies launched the nonprofit organization, Fifteen Percent Pledge.  The initiative calls for major retailers to dedicate a minimum 15% of shelf space to Black-owned business.  Sephora was the first major corporation to pledge. Denisa Palsha Created by Project Runway designer Sebastian Grey, using upcycled leather. Many guests were noted to have gone thrifting for the event.   Checking in with Big Red!  Yesterday, there was some pipping. This is when the baby chick begins pecking away until its beak breaks through the inner membrane. We'll come back soon for those hatchlings!

  This piece was put on display in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The exhibition also included Rihanna's Met Gala gown from 2015.
